904 flue liner or 316 flue liner. What is the difference and why does it matter?

The difference between these 316 and 904 liners is the composition of the stainless steel layers within the liner.
Stainless steel is made by combining iron ore, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum and carbon, to produce a steel that is more corrosion resistant than other types.

stainless steel manufacturing

Varying the exact proportions of the elements that go into the stainless steel, varies the properties of the steel , so that corrosion resistance, hardness, malleability & other properties can be different, depending on the grade.
As a result, 904 grade, is more resistant to corrosive chemicals than 316 grade , such as the acidic by-products from burning fuels, that would typically congregate in a chimney flue.
But this makes it more expensive (Interestingly, 904 grade is used in Rolex watches).

Flexible liners are formed using two layers of stainless steel, the grade being being either 316 or 904.
Because there are two layers to flexible chimney liners, there are in effect, three configurations as follows:

• 316 grade inner / 316 grade outer. Suitable for burning dried seasoned wood, gas, oil and low sulphur coal .
• 904 grade inner /316 grade outer. Suitable for burning dried seasoned wood, coal, gas, oil, & low sulphur coal.
• 904 grade inner /904 grade outer . Suitable for burning dry seasoned wood, gas, oil, low sulphur coal, coke, peat and smokeless fuels.

Multi-fuel 316 grade liner is adequate for most people's stove needs. However, if you plan on burning any smokeless fuels, burning a tonne of coal, or leaving the stove on over night, the 904/904 grade liner would be more suitable.
This is because it is a higher grade of stainless steel that can withstand the higher temperatures, chemicals, and moisture that may be present during the burning process.
