Do I need twin wall flue?

Twin wall flue pipe (also known as double wall or insulated flue) is a type of flue system constructed from two layers of rigid stainless steel, sandwiching a layer of rock wool insulation.

Twin wall flue is generally used when there is no chimney stack ; it is in effect it's own chimney stack and liner combined.

Situations where you would need twin wall flue:

● Where no chimney stack exists (or it's not possible to line one)
● When providing flues to appliances in sheds, caravans, boats, summerhouses etc

If you have a brick chimney stack that can be lined with a flexible chimney liner, and it is structurally sound and serviceable, then you should use that.

If you have a home without a chimney stack (or a stack that has been partially removed) then you will need a twin wall flue. In some circumstances, you may want to install a stove away from where the existing chimney is situated, in which case a twin wall flue would be necessary.

Some things to consider if you do need twin wall flue:

  • Planning: Twin wall flue cannot be cut, so you need to plan your flue run, bends etc carefully and order the correct parts
  • Passing through walls: There are numerous requirements when passing through walls, so please consult Building Regulations Part J
  • Bends: It cannot have more than four bends and no bend can be more than 45 degrees
  • Colour: Twin wall is commonly available in a sliver stainless steel finish, but is also available in black powder coating
