What size flue liner do I need for a woodburner?
With so many different sizes available, it can be confusing to know what size to purchase. Thankfully, it's not as complicated as it may first seem.
Typically, you can install a chimney liner that is the same size as the outlet on your burner. For example, you can purchase a 6-inch stove liner if your woodburner or appliance has a 6 inch outlet.
The minimum flue liner size allowed in the United Kingdom by Building Regulations is 6 inches (150mm).There are, however, some exceptions to this.
If one of the following applies, you can use a 5-inch (125mm) flue liner with a 5 inch stove:
● You'll just be using smokeless fuel
● Your stove is DEFRA exempt for wood burning.
You can increase your size as needed, using an adaptor, but not the other way around.
For example, you couldn't, connect a 5 inch liner to a 6 inch outlet as this will prevent gases from being properly drawn up the flue, but you could connect a 7 inch liner (using an adaptor) to a 6 inch outlet.
What length of liner will you need?
To calculate the length required , you need to measure from the top of the chimney, where the liner will connect to a cowling, down to the register/closure plate , which is usually just above where the appliance sits.
If you chimney is fairly straightforward, it may be possible to estimate by counting the brick courses, allowing a bit of leeway for errors. OF course, twists and turns in the flue will complicate that.
One way to find out, is to get your chimney swept and ask your chimney sweep how tall your stack is. He will be able to calculate this from the number of sections used in his brush.
If all else fails, you can drop a piece of weighted line down the chimney, and measure that. Do be sure to add on a little length for errors, as the liner can be easily cut if too long, but you don't want it too short.
