Do Pizza Ovens Need a Chimney?

Pizza ovens are great - who wouldn’t want to relax in the garden with a delicious cooked pizza.

The issue with pizza ovens - they smoke a lot!

If your pizza oven doesn’t have a proper installed venting system you may find your outside area consumed by smoke. The solution? Ensure your oven is properly vented.

Many people aren’t actually aware just how important a chimney ventilation system is or whether a pizza oven needs a chimney at all!

Like any solid fuel burning appliance, a pizza oven needs to be vented.

Ventilation is vital to ensure the flame burns efficiently, smoke is correctly removed to stop spoiling of your food and smoke isn’t blowing in your face.

A pizza oven works similar to a wood burning stove.

As the fire inside burns, the differential between the hot air & the cold air outside creates an imbalance in pressure known as a draught.

If your pizza oven is vented with a chimney, this will allow the hot air to be sucked upwards, carrying the smoke out whilst cooler air can be drawn to the front of the oven.

If you don’t vent your pizza oven, air and smoke has nowhere to go but out of the same “front door” which is not ideal for cooking.

The chimney or flue you choose for your pizza oven is important to make sure your pizza oven is working correctly. Without the right flue, the oven will not get hotter enough.

Any chimney will only work if the air outside is cooler than the warm air inside the flue, causing the air in the flue to rise and create a draw.

The warmer the air inside the flue, the stronger the draw will be.
