Iconic Poolbeg Chimneys Facing Dilemma

Dublin’s Poolbey Chimney stacks may need to be encased in fibreglass or concrete in order to ensure their long-term survival, costing millions of Euros.

A maintenance programme to ensure the chimneys short term stability has already cost several million euros, and included in 2015 the placing of steel caps to the top of the chimneys.

The twin chimneys painted with their distinctive red and whtie stripes, were built in the 1970s and were only intended to have an operational life of 30-40s.

The chimneys were decommissioned in 2006 & 2010, but agreement was put in place to ensure ongoing maintenance for 10 years in 2017.

Concerns now have been raised though that encasing the 207m tall structures would change their appearance however.

The chimneys, which have become an iconic feature of the Dublin Skyline are secure as of now but long-term an encasing in concrete or fibreglass would be necessary to maintain their survival. They are currently undergoing assessment before any formal situations are made.

When pushed for an exact figure of the cost of maintenance the council declined to publish, but expected the cost to be “several millions of Euros”
