What Is A Flue Liner?

A flue liner or sometimes referred to as a chimney liner, is a flexible tube that connects to your stove pipe, in order to line the inside of your chimney. It will run the entire length of your chimney, carrying smoke up your flue liner and releasing it straight out the top of your chimney.

How can I tell if I have a chimney liner?

If you are installing or using your chimney for the first time, you should have it inspected by a professional. This will ensure it is operating safely with no leaks or blockages. A professional will be able to tell you whether your chimney is lined but more importantly if you do have a flue liner, the quality of the liner.

Just because you may have a flue liner, it is important to remember that not all flue liners are designed the same.

For example if you are using a solid fuel burning stove, then you need to make sure you are not using a flue liner meant for gas fuel.

There are two different grades of steel flue liner

  • 316 grade. The cheaper of the two but the choice to use if you are burning seasoned wood only.
  • 904 grade. The more expensive option but also the most durable. You should use this grade if you plan on burning coal frequently.
